My first involvement in animal welfare/rescue started whilst living in the UAE. I became involved in a spay/neuter campaign for street cats and instigated the relocation of a lioness from Dubai Zoo to S. Africa.
My involvement in Romania started in 2004, when I volunteered to travel to Romania to work and improve conditions for animals in Pitesti Zoo. ‘The Lions Roar’ was started by our small group of dedicated volunteers, after hearing of a small, run down, closed zoo near Bacau, that needed help. Over 5 years, we looked after and relocated all the zoo animals, to sanctuaries around the world.
It was whilst doing this, that I became aware of the plight of the street dogs, which were being poisoned and killed. I decided someone had to do something and I contacted RAR to organise a sterilisation event for the street dogs of Buhusi. I knew about the terrible conditions in the public shelter in Bacau and I was greatly affected by the suffering of the dogs, after a visit to the shelter in 2014.
Joining like-minded people is wonderful, we are already starting to make a difference.
